Ebay hit with cyber-attack, asks users to change passwords

EBay Inc., operator of the online- auction site, is asking users to change their passwords after a cyber-attack exposed a database with the login information and other data such as birthdays and phone numbers.

There's no evidence of unauthorized activity resulting from the breach, eBay said Wednesday in a statement. While credit-card numbers are stored separately and encrypted, it's still best to change passwords, the company said.

Cyber attackers got into eBay's corporate network by getting access to a small number of employee passwords. The company is working with authorities to investigate the breach, which occurred between late February and early March. California-based eBay said it first learned about two weeks ago that the employee login credentials had been compromised.

Shares of Nasdaq-traded eBay fell about 1.4 percent to $51.24 in early trading.
