Google app directs drivers around traffic

Google is looking to take the guess work out of navigating through Long Island's agonizing rush hour traffic with a new beta version of Google Maps Navigation for Android phones. The GPS app uses real-time and historical traffic conditions to recommend the best routes to take.

Google uses data that drivers using the Google mobile app anonymously and voluntarily agree to share by enabling the My Location service on their phone.

Although a step in the right direction, don't expect the end of traffic jams. A sudden crash or a roadside police emergency can make the "real time" traffic data meaningless.

The updated app isn't official just yet, but driver's can download the Google Maps update for free via the Android Market.
