HBO is targeting an April launch of its standalone streaming service, which would coincide with the "Game of Thrones" season premiere, according to a report on Fortune.com.

Fortune also reported that HBO will use technology built by MLB Advanced to launch the service, thus ending a plan to build its own platform.

The future of HBO Go, the company's streaming service for cable subscribers, is unclear.

HBO Go took a beating from frustrated subscribers earlier this year when it crashed repeatedly during the season finale of another popular show, "True Detective."

HBO already confirmed in October that it would launch a standalone service.
