Tech bytes: Cat videos vie for a Friskie
Why was the Internet invented? For many, the answer is to upload cat videos. And while your video of Tabby doing kitty acrobatics won't win an Oscar, it could garner a Friskie (thefriskies.com). The cat food maker will honor the best Internet cat video with a $15,000 prize. Friskies will also donate up to 250,000 cans of cat food to animal rescue organizations and shelters.
Kindle HD ads: Pony up to opt out
When Amazon unveiled its Kindle Fire HD earlier this month, some potential buyers were angry about the streaming "special offers" ads on the device's lock screen because there was no way to turn them off. In response, Amazon has announced an opt-out feature -- for a one-time payment of $15. Amazon says it expects few customers will opt out.
Cowell's heady claim
Simon Cowell says he can make better-sounding headphones than Dr. Dre. Cowell, a judge on "The X Factor," unveiled the X Headphones ($299) in collaboration with Sony. The effort will compete against Beats by Dre headphones, founded by music producer Jimmy Iovine and rapper Dr. Dre. -- Bloomberg News
