There seems to be something about birds that enthralls smart-phone users across the globe because Tiny Wings, a new iPhone app that debuted on Feb. 18, introduces a new feathered friend in a game that has steam-rolled its way to the top of the most-downloaded app list in the App Store. In the wake of the unbelievably successful App Store favorite Angry Birds, Tiny Wings takes addiction to a new level.

The main character of Tiny Wings is small turquoise-colored bird that dreams of flying. You, the player, must name it and help it achieve that dream. The only game-play mechanic is the pressing of a finger anywhere on the bottom half of the screen. The real trick is to cue up with the bird’s descent with the slope of a hill to boost speed and keep the bird’s wings flapping.

Each play-through takes place over the course of one day, and when the sun finally sets, your bird falls into a deep sleep. However, if you can get into the groove and keep up your speed, you can send your bird flying to a new island and the sun will rise  again, allowing you to keep playing and wracking up speed and points.

Tiny Wings is a truly brilliant game, and I’ve found myself playing it far more than Angry Birds because of how easy it is to slip into the game. In addition to the game play, Tiny Wings also features a vibrant landscape of colors that change each new day you play the game and a mind-bogglingly catchy soundtrack.

For only 99 cents, this is a must buy that will make you rethink how addicted you can be to an iPhone app. Unfortunately for Droid users, this one is currently iPhone-only.
