KEY EVENT: December thaw? U.S. employers in December closed out the strongest year of hiring since 1999. But the Long Island employment situation has been less robust, with the number of local jobs created falling for four straight months. Did Long Island job creation heat up as 2014 ended? The answer comes Thursday, when the state Labor Department posts Long Island jobs added in December.
MONDAY: U.S. financial markets closed for Martin Luther King Day.
TUESDAY: The housing market optimism index for January from the National Association of Home Builders. Earnings: CA Technologies, Johnson & Johnson, Netflix.
WEDNESDAY: Microsoft is expected to officially announce Windows 10, the latest version of the operating system that runs the vast majority of the world's computers. Also, the Commerce Department releases December housing starts. Earnings: American Express, eBay.
THURSDAY: Jobless benefits claims for the week ended Jan. 17 from the U.S. Labor Department. Also, single-family home prices for November from the Federal Housing Finance Agency. Earnings: Capital One, Verizon Communications.
FRIDAY: The National Association of Retailers posts existing home sales and The Conference Board releases leading economic indicators. Earnings: Bank of New York Mellon, General Electric.
