KEY EVENT: Christmas Future. The 2013 holiday gifts are barely unwrapped -- or freshly returned -- but get ready for a look at what may be hot this December. The annual four-day Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas kicks off Tuesday as giant companies and tiny startups offer an early look at next-generation TVs, tablets, smartphones and gadgets.
MONDAY: The Commerce Department posts factory orders for November.
TUESDAY: The nation's trade gap for November from the Commerce Department. Earnings: semiconductor maker Micron Technology.
WEDNESDAY: The Federal Reserve decided to taper its controversial bond-buying program in December, and the release of the Fed minutes from that meeting may explain the central bank's rationale. Also, ADP releases its report on private-sector jobs created in December. Earnings: Melville industrial supplies distributor MSC Industrial Direct, Hauppauge consumer electronics seller Voxx International, Bed Bath & Beyond.
THURSDAY: Claims for jobless benefits for the week ended Jan. 4 from the Labor Department. Earnings: Alcoa.
FRIDAY: The employment situation improved in November, suggesting a strengthening in the economy. Did the recovery pick up steam as the year ended? The answer comes as the Labor Department releases unemployment and jobs created in December.
