KEY EVENT: Food for thought. Your supermarket receipt is not lying: prices are rising and consumers are spending more for many everyday items, especially food and energy. On Tuesday, the Labor Department releases June consumer prices, the government's bellwether inflation measure. The report includes separate data for the 31 Northeast counties including Long Island, where food prices rose 2.6 percent in May, biggest year-over-year increase in 19 months.

MONDAY: Earnings from Chipotle Mexican Grill, Hasbro, Netflix and Texas Instruments.

TUESDAY: The state Labor Department releases Long Island unemployment rates for June. Also, June existing home sales from the National Association of Realtors. Earnings: Apple, Coca-Cola, McDonald's, Microsoft, Verizon.

WEDNESDAY: Earnings from Lake Success bank company Astoria Financial, CA Technologies, Westbury bank company New York Community Bancorp, Facebook, Northrop Grumman and Roosevelt Field mall owner Simon Property.

THURSDAY: New home sales in June from the Commerce Department and jobless benefits claims for the week ended July 19 from the U.S. Labor Department. Earnings: Caterpillar, Ford, General Motors, Visa.

FRIDAY: The Commerce Department releases June durable goods orders. Earnings: Stanley Black & Decker.
