KEY EVENT: Back to work. The Long Island unemployment rate in August was 5.1 percent, down from 5.3 percent the month before and down a full percentage point from August 2013. With the national jobless rate in September hitting a six-year low, will the positive trend continue locally? Answers come Tuesday when the state Labor Department releases September unemployment rates for Nassau, Suffolk and Long Island as a whole.
MONDAY: Earnings from Apple, Chipotle Mexican Grill, Hasbro and IBM.
TUESDAY: Existing home sales for September from the National Association of Realtors. Earnings: Harley-Davidson, Coca-Cola, Verizon Communications, Yahoo.
WEDNESDAY: The U.S. Labor Department releases September consumer prices, the nation's most watched inflation guide. Earnings: Islandia software maker CA Technologies, Westbury bank company New York Community Bancorp, AT&T, Boeing, General Motors, Northrop Grumman, Roosevelt Field mall owner Simon Property Group.
THURSDAY: Jobless benefits claims for the week ended Oct. 18 from the U.S. Labor Department. Also, single-family home prices for August from the Federal Housing Finance Agency. Earnings: 3M, Amazon, Caterpillar, Comcast, Microsoft.
FRIDAY: New home sales for September from the Commerce Department. Earnings: Colgate-Palmolive, Procter & Gamble, United Parcel Service.
