Title company chief charged in $10M mortgage fraud ring

The head of a Rocky Point title services company faces nine felony counts in connection with a $10 million mortgage fraud ring.
The arrest earlier this month of Craig Hecht, who runs Legacy Land Services, is the latest in the Suffolk district attorney’s investigation of an alleged scheme that used straw buyers, forged down payment checks and false reports.
“He ran a title agency that allegedly produced false title reports to enable his co-defendants to flip houses and earn millions of dollars in sales proceeds,” said Bob Clifford, spokesman for the district attorney’s office.
Hecht, 43, of Mount Sinai, was arrested July 13 on charges of grand larceny, falsifying business records and scheme to defraud. The next court date is Sept. 23.
His attorney, William Wexler of North Babylon, said he saw no proof against his client.
Two Suffolk attorneys were arraigned in May.
