Commack Toys R Us, scheduled to close, will remain open

The Toys R Us store in Commack, which had been slated to close as part of the retailer’s bankruptcy reorganization, is among dozens that are no longer showing up on a list of locations to be shuttered.

In January, Wayne, New Jersey-based Toys R Us Inc. announced it would be closing as many as 182 underperforming stores, representing about 20 percent of its U.S. locations, as part of its Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing. At that time, 176 stores were listed on the company’s website as being slated for closure.

As of Friday afternoon, only 144 stores were listed on the closure list online.

The two stores in New York that have been removed from the list are in Veterans Memorial Plaza in Commack, which is a combined Toys R Us and Babies R Us location, and a Toys R Us in Queensbury in Warren County upstate.

Toys R Us said the New York stores were removed from the closure list after further negotiation but did not provide specifics.

The retailer is leasing the Commack building from New Hyde Park-based Kimco Realty Corp., which declined to comment.

Toys R Us said the 144 stores on its closure list now are those that started liquidation sales Feb. 7.

The company did not respond to an inquiry about exactly how many stores are being closed.

In a court filing Jan. 23, Toys R Us said its management team and advisers analyzed all stores to evaluate them on several factors, including profitability, sales trends, occupancy costs, geographic markets, and the potential to negotiate rent reductions with applicable landlords.
