Event to help LI firms reduce impact of tariffs on imports from China, elsewhere

Reducing the impact of higher U.S. tariffs on imports from China and other foreign countries is the topic of a free workshop for local businesses set for Oct. 30 in Melville.
Veteran shipping executive Thomas A. Cook, managing director of Blue Tiger International consultants in East Moriches, will discuss foreign trade zones, alternative sourcing, bonded warehouses and other avenues that can lessen the tariffs’ impact. He also will present a case study of a Long Island company.
“There is hope…It’s not a dead-end,” Cook said. “There are things you can do to mitigate the impact” of tariffs.
The workshop, which runs from 8 to 11:30 a.m., is sponsored by the manufacturers’ group Ignite Long Island, the Long Island Import-Export Association, the U.S. Department of Commerce’s New York District Export Council and transportation provider Sparx Logistics. It will take place in the headquarters of commercial insurer Bradley & Parker, 320 South Service Rd., Melville.
