Stocks are edging mostly higher in the early going. Markets are generally quiet with trading closed across Europe for the Easter holiday.

In the United States, several stocks were moving on corporate news Monday. Avon Products jumped 5 percent after reaching a deal with activist investors that appeared to head off a proxy fight.

Starwood Hotels gained 3 percent after China’s Anbang Insurance Group raised its offer for the company.

The Dow Jones industrial average edged up seven points, less than 0.1 percent, to 17,523. Standard & Poor’s 500 index was up a point to 2,036. The Nasdaq composite slipped six points to 4,766.

Bond prices rose. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note fell to 1.89 percent.
