Stony Brook University faculty and students, working with the Ward Melville Heritage Organization, have installed a power generator at the historic Stony Brook Grist Mill – using the same hydropower once used to mill grain – as a demonstration of “the untapped potential of New York State’s renewable energy sources,” the university announced this week.

The system was installed in April at the mill, which was built in 1751 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The university said the system, above right, is producing up to 1.5 kilowatts of electricity, roughly the amount needed to supply electricity to two homes.
