Carpenters' union postpones search for 100 high-rise concrete apprentices due to COVID
The Joint Apprenticeship and Training Committee for the High-Rise Concrete Carpenters union of New York City has stopped taking applications for 100 apprenticeships because of COVID restrictions, officials said on Thursday.
Peter Bennett, director of the New York City District Council of Carpenters' training center, said it has been closed to slow the spread of the coronavirus so apprenticeship applicants cannot obtain the necessary forms. Recruitment will resume once the center at 395 Hudson St. in Manhattan reopens, he said.
"Due to the in-person requirement to apply for our apprenticeship program, applications have been postponed until further notice due to COVID," Bennett said.
When recruitment resumes, applicants must present a government-issued picture ID to receive a form, which upon completion should be mailed to the center.
Applicants are required to attend a four-hour orientation and to submit to an interview. Latecomers will be disqualified.
Applicants must be 17 or older, have a high school diploma or its equivalent, be physically able to do the work, pass a drug test and be legally able to work in the United States.
