A top executive at Veeco Instruments Inc. in Plainview has been named to a national committee advising the U.S. Commerce Department on export issues.

Gregory A. Robbins, Veeco’s general counsel and senior vice president, is among 24 members of the export administration subcommittee of the President’s Export Council. The subcommittee, which holds its first meeting Thursday, reviews laws aimed at preventing U.S. security from being undermined by U.S. exports to foreign countries.

The subcommittee is one of six under the export council, which was reorganized in 2009 after President Barack Obama set the goal of doubling U.S. exports by 2014.

Robbins joined Veeco in November 1999. The company produces high-technology machines used by manufacturers of energy-efficient lights, solar cells and other products. It also supplies equipment to hard-disk drive makers.

In addition to Veeco, the exports subcommittee includes executives from Boeing, Federal Express, General Electric, Honeywell, Hughes Network Systems and Northrop Grumman.
