Veeco expanding in Asia

Plainview-based Veeco Instruments Inc. is expanding in Asia, with plans to open new offices in China, Taiwan, Korea, Singapore and Japan.
The moves are meant to “better support the rapid growth of the LED industry and the needs of its customers,” the company said in a news release. Veeco makes tools used to create light-emitting diodes, which are in high demand by makers of laptop screens, PC monitors, flat-screen TVs and cell phones.
In Shanghai, China, it will open a customer support and training center.
In Hsinchu, Taiwan, it will build an applications center and demonstration laboratory.
In Korea, it will build an engineering and process development center with tool demonstration and customer training facilities.
In Singapore it will have an expanded manufacturing center and supply chain hub.
In Japan, the company will expand and change its sales office to a direct sales operation instead of the current representative sales office. All the changes are expected to be completed by next year.
LEDs are increasingly favored by electronics makers because they consume far less power than traditional light sources and extend battery life.
