Veeco Instruments Inc., of Plainview, said Tuesday that it has sold a batch of its new generation of LED-making machines to a Taiwanese manufacturing company.

The Veeco machines are used to produce high-brightness light emitting diodes for use in displays and backlighting for cell phones, laptops and televisions; for automotive headlights; and other applications.

Veeco's tools use a technology called  metal organic chemical vapor deposition. The method involves creating electronic components by adding fine layers, on a nano-scale basis, on areas of a microchip.

Veeco, in its sales announcements, typically doesn't disclose competitive information such as the number of machines in a given order. Its machines range in price upward from $2.5 million each.

The Taiwanese buyer is Genesis Photonics Inc.

The model purchased is Veeco's TurboDisc MaxBright Multi-reactor system, which puts a single or double pair of reactors in a cluster in a single machine, freeing up floor space at LED factories while increasing the rate of production.
