Veeco sells LED-making tools to Taiwan firm

Plainview-based Veeco Instruments Inc. this week said it has expanded its reach into the light-emitting diode manufacturing sectors of Taiwan and China, with the sale of a multiunit order of its newest LED machine tools to a Taiwanese company and its mainland Chinese affiliate.

The buyer is Formosa Epitaxy, of Taiwan, and its affiliate is Jiangsu Canyang Corp.

Formosa Epitaxy, also known as Forepi, bought Veeco’s recently released TurboDisc MaxBright Multi-Reactor system, which produces high-brightness LEDs. Forepi distributes its finished LED products to customers in the United States, Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong and China.

In a news release, Frank Chien, president of Jiangsu Canyang, said his company bought Veeco's compact four-chamber configuration, which is the equivalent of four times the production capacity of Veeco's earlier generation machines. The multichamber machines take up less space on factory floors than four of the previous generation's stand-alone machines.
