Walmart hiring for LI debut of 'Neighborhood Market'

Walmart has opened a hiring center in Levittown, as the retail giant prepares for the Long Island debut of one of its smaller format stores this summer.

This week, the chain, which is based in Bentonville, Ark., opened a hiring center at 148 Gardiners Ave. with plans to recruit about 90 people to work at the first Walmart Neighborhood Market to open on the Island, the company said.

Walmart has opened about 250 such stores nationwide. The new 49,000 square-foot store in Levittown’s Gardiner Plaza will have a pharmacy and sell produce, meats, dairy products, frozen foods and deli items in addition to household and pet supplies. The Neighborhood Markets are about a quarter of the size of its large format store.

Development of the store generated about 100 construction jobs, Walmart said.

The company is accepting applications at the center between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. Applicants can also apply online.

Most of the new employees will start in June to help prepare the store for its grand opening in July. In the company’s promotional materials, it notes that the average full-time hourly wage for Walmart associates in New York is $12.74 an hour.
