Jasmine rice sold at Wegmans, other stores recalled after possible presence of 'foreign material'

Long Islanders may want to check their pantries: A manufacturer has recal led some bags of rice sold at Wegmans and other stores because of the possible presence of "foreign material."

Lundberg Family Farms recalled 2-pound bags of  Lundberg organic jasmine white rice on Saturday, according to a recall notice from national grocery retailer Wegmans.

Wegmans will offer a full refund for consumers who opt to return the bags.

Wegmans, headquartered in Rochester, has one outpost on Long Island, on Middle Country Road in Lake Grove. The retailer operates other stores in New York City and upstate, according to the company’s website.

The recalled bags can be identified by their universal product code, 073416- 040281, and by the following best-by dates and lot codes: 02/01/2027, 260201 and 02/02/2027, 260202, according to the recall notice.

Target, Walmart and Whole Foods also sell Lundberg Family Farms rice products, according to their websites.

A representative for Wegmans declined to answer questions about the recall, and referred questions to Lundberg Family Farms. Representatives for Lundberg Family Farms, Target, Walmart and Whole Foods did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

The recall involved about 4,500 cases of 2-pound white rice pouches, Lundberg Family Farms told USA Today.

The Richvale, California-based company voluntarily recalled the product in what’s known as a Class II recall — one where exposure to the recalled product "may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences" or where "the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote," according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
