Anyone wondering about the geometric maze-like block on the side of Evan Bloom’s business card would have found out about it – and quick response codes – at Tuesday’s breakfast meeting in Westbury of the Social Media Club of Long Island.

That’s when Bloom, owner of three Sir Speedy printing and marketing franchises on Long Island, gave a primer on such QR codes to the some 30 attendees.  Those codes are mobile tags that can be printed on items like advertisements, business cards, even tee shirts, and that can then be “read” when you take a photo with a specially-enabled smart phone.

So, instead of scrambling to write down information from an advertisement or billboard, the consumer can swipe (photograph) the code, and, voila, the merchant’s web site opens right then and there on the consumer’s smart phone.

Think of it as “a sophisticated bar code,” said Bloom.
