Westbury project advances

The 22-acre site of the former Avis Rent A Car headquarters at 900 Old Country Road in Westbury is a step closer to a complete remake that would bring a new hotel, stores and restaurants — and demolition for the existing structures.

Equity One Inc. got the approvals it needs to build a hotel in an industrial zone, and waivers for exceeding floor area limits and parking-space requirements, Hempstead Town board of zoning appeals records show. The approvals came Aug. 18.

The site is bordered to the east by Zeckendorf Boulevard and to the west by East Gate Boulevard. It has a white border in the Google map above.

The company must go to the town's building department next to have its site and building plans approved.

Equity One, based in Manhattan, has a flyer on its website giving few details on its plan, except to call it a "ground-up development project".

Equity One operates another major shopping center just down the street - Westbury Plaza, at 1220 Old Country Rd., anchored by Costco and Walmart.
