Workshop on keeping elevated homes handicapped-accessible

The owners of Sandy-damaged homes who are trying to elevate their homes while still keeping them handicapped-accessible can get help at a workshop on Thursday.

The workshop will take place from 4 to 9 p.m. at the Long Beach Library, 111 W. Park Ave.

County, state and federal officials, nonprofit agencies and construction professionals will be available for consultations starting at 4 p.m., and a formal presentation will begin at 6 p.m.

The workshop will provide information about elevators, lifts and ramps, as well as zoning rules, medical information needed to obtain federal storm recovery funds and other issues.

The event is hosted by Nassau County legislators Denise Ford (R-Long Beach) and Howard Kopel (R-Lawrence); state Assemb. Todd Kaminsky (D-Long Beach); and Long Beach Community Organizations Active in Disaster.

Attendees also can get information about federal Small Business Administration programs, as well as social and mental health services.

On March 3, a workshop will be held in Massapequa Park. Details about the location and time will be announced later.
