Stocks notched broad gains in afternoon trading Monday, heading for a strong close and moving past any concerns that the terrorist attacks in Paris could spell trouble for the global economy. European markets shook off an early loss and ended mixed.

Investors bid up shares in energy companies as oil prices rose.

In late afternoon on Wall Street, the Dow Jones industrial average had gained 232.7 points, about 1.4 percent, to 17,478. The Standard & Poor's 500 index rose 29.1 points, about 1.4 percent, to 2,052. The Nasdaq composite climbed 54 points, about 1.1 percent, to 4,981.7.

About the same time, the price of benchmark U.S. crude oil gained $1.06 to $41.80 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

The U.S. stock market is coming off its biggest weekly loss since August.

The 10 sectors in the S&P 500 index rose, with oil and gas stocks building the biggest gain as oil prices rose. The energy sector in the S&P 500 soared 2.4 percent, far more than the rest of the market. Energy has been the biggest laggard among industries this year, down 15.6 percent, as the price of oil has continued to slump.
