Stocks closed with modest gains Monday, putting the U.S. market close to record high.

At the end of the day on Wall Street, the Standard & Poor's 500 was up 6.2 points, about 0.3 percent, at 2,114.5, three points short of its record high on April 24. The Dow Jones industrial average gained 46.3 points, about 0.3 percent, to 18,070.4. The Nasdaq composite added 11.5 points, about 0.2 percent, to nearly 5,017.

As the markets closed, U.S. benchmark crude oil was down 22 cents to close at $58.93 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

Cognizant Technology Solutions jumped 6 percent, the most in the S&P 500, after the consulting company reported earnings that beat analysts' forecasts. Cognizant also raised its earnings and sales outlook for the year.

Bond prices fell. The yield on the 10-year Treasury note rose to 2.14 percent.
