The rain stopped, the sun appeared and <a href="/topics/New_York%2C_NY">New York</a>'s major auto show opened Wednesday amid signs that new-vehicle sales are recovering from a 35 percent slide nationally in the past two years - 21 percent on Long Island - that forced thousands of dealers out of business. 
The <a href="/topics/New_York%2C_NY">New York</a> International Automobile Show kicked off at the Javits Center with the traditional upbeat speech by a major industry figure. This year it was <a href="/topics/Ford_Motor_Company">Ford Motor Co</a>.'s president and chief executive Alan <a href="/topics/Alan_R._Mulally">Mulally</a>, who said, "We made it through one of the worst recessions since the Depression." 
Despite a surge in business last year from the Cash for Clunkers program, automakers sold only about 10.4 million new cars and trucks nationally, the lowest total in 27 years. Sales were nearing 17 million a year before the <a href="/topics/Economic_Recession">recession</a>. 
On Long Island, new vehicle registrations fell by 21 percent from 2007 to 175,939 cars and trucks in 2009, according to the auto information company R.L. Polk and Co. But in January there was a boost - almost 7 percent from a year earlier, to 12,344 new registrations. Still, full recovery is far off. In January 2008, local dealers sold more than 16,700 new vehicles. 
Local figures for February and March aren't available yet, but nationally, February sales rose by 13 percent and automakers are expected Thursday to post gains for March. 
Still, not everyone was as upbeat as <a href="/topics/Alan_R._Mulally">Mulally</a>. 
<a href="/topics/Hyundai">Hyundai Motor</a> America president <a href="/topics/John_Krafcik">John Krafcik</a> said that some of the gains nationally have been in sales to fleets. "The U.S consumer is, I think, still skeptical about the strength of the economic recovery." 
And, automakers and dealers said, credit still is tight for buyers seeking financing. "Credit availability is better than it was a year ago," said <a href="/topics/General_Motors">General Motors</a>' Jim Campbell, "but still tighter than it was two years ago." 
Industry experts attributed the brighter sales picture in part to warmer weather in March, and also to special leasing programs, cash rebates and other sales incentives. Since Friday, <a href="/topics/General_Motors">GM</a>, Toyota, <a href="/topics/Honda">Honda</a> and <a href="/topics/Nissan">Nissan</a> have announced plans to boost production to meet growing demand in the United States, and, in some cases, <a href="/topics/China">China</a>. 
<a href="/topics/General_Motors">GM</a> cited as one factor strong sales of its Equinox, a mid-size sport utility vehicle, and the similar GMC Terrain. 
Long Island Chevy dealer Mark Calisi, owner of the Eagle Auto Mall in <a href="/topics/Riverhead%2C_NY">Riverhead</a>, said he wished he could get more of them, as well as Traverses and certain pickup trucks, but his <a href="/topics/Chevrolet">Chevrolet</a> sales have been about 30 percent higher this month than a year earlier. "If I had more product," he said, "I would go to 50 percent." 
At Security <a href="/topics/Chrysler">Chrysler</a> <a href="/topics/Dodge">Dodge</a> <a href="/topics/Jeep">Jeep</a> in <a href="/topics/Amityville%2C_NY">Amityville</a>, co-owner Gabe Vigorito said sales are up 65 percent this month from a year ago, in part because it has taken over the <a href="/topics/Jeep">Jeep</a> franchises formerly operating in <a href="/topics/Lindenhurst%2C_NY">Lindenhurst</a> as Island <a href="/topics/Jeep">Jeep</a>. "All of them are moving well," he said of the <a href="/topics/Jeep">Jeep</a> models.

Automakers gear up for New York auto show

The first of what will be 650 truckloads of displays and vehicles begin arriving Wednesday at the Jacob Javits Convention Center's loading docks, to be transformed over the next week into the 2010 New York International Automobile Show. 
The event, which opens to the public April 2, is an annual rite that dealers hope will help jump-start the spring new-car-buying season. It pumps about $200 million into the city's economy, including 50,000 overnight hotel room stays for out-of-towners attending the show and related events, according to its promoter, the Greater New York Automobile Dealers Association. 
Exhibit space, more than 800,000 square feet, is sold out to 35 carmakers and other companies, said Mark Schienberg, president of the dealer group. 
Schienberg says carmakers are watching their pennies, but that he still expects about 1,000 vehicles to be on display through April 11, when the show ends. 
"They're not pulling back as far as the events they are holding, but they are looking carefully at their expenses," he said. 
Research done for the dealer group indicates that auto shows deliver a return in showrooms, especially in the cases of shoppers intending to buy soon. Show organizers urge carmakers to display cars with doors unlocked to allow prospective buyers to sit behind the steering wheel. 
Public attendance is expected once again to exceed 1 million, making New York's show traditionally the nation's best attended. "We're keeping our fingers crossed and hoping the economy keeps getting a little better," Schienberg said. 
Despite a surge in business from the Cash for Clunkers program, automakers sold 21.2 percent fewer new cars and trucks in this country last year than the year before, or about 10.4 million, the lowest total in 27 years, according to the <a href="/topics/Michigan">Michigan</a>-based auto information company R.L. Polk. Total U.S. sales of new cars and trucks were approaching 17 million a year before the <a href="/topics/Economic_Recession">recession</a> set in. 
New auto technology on display will include what Volvo says is the world's first pedestrian detection system with full automatic braking. 
"The car will stop itself if a pedestrian steps out in front of it and the driver doesn't apply the brakes at speeds up to 22 mph," the company says. At speeds beyond that, the car applies the brakes to reduce the impact speed. The system is to be available in the redesigned S60 sedan. 
New cars on display, a few of which are being shown for the first time anywhere, include the tiny Toyota <a href="/topics/Scion">Scion</a> IQ, a Smart-size commuter car, and an ultra-luxurious Bentley, the convertible version of the $270,000-plus Continental Supersports. 
At least four new hybrids are to be on display, including versions of the <a href="/topics/Hyundai_Sonata">Hyundai Sonata</a>, <a href="/topics/Porsche_Cayenne">Porsche Cayenne</a> and <a href="/topics/Volkswagen_Touareg">Volkswagen Touareg</a>, and a new compact sedan from <a href="/topics/Lexus">Lexus</a>, the CT 200h. 
There'll be at least one new pure electric, a variant of the Ford Transit Connect commercial van. 
And even some performance models are being shown with a "green" pitch: Ford, for example, announced recently that its redesigned 2011 <a href="/topics/Ford_Mustang">Ford Mustang</a> GT, which will be on display at the show and go on sale soon, has been federally certified at 26 mpg in highway driving, despite its 412-hp, 5.0-liter, V-8 engine.

New York Auto Show set to hit Jacob Javits

(AP) — Porsche shot to the top of a closely watched study of long-term vehicle dependability, overtaking U.S. and Japanese rivals, J.D. Power and Associates said Thursday. 
The German sports car brand took the No. 1 spot in the annual study, which gave it ninth place last year. Lincoln came in second, while <a href="/topics/Buick">Buick</a> and <a href="/topics/Lexus">Lexus</a> tied for third. Mercury and Toyota rounded out the top five. 
The annual study measures problems experienced by the original owners of vehicles after three years. In last year's study, <a href="/topics/Buick">Buick</a> and <a href="/topics/Jaguar">Jaguar</a> tied for fewest problems, but both brands lost ground to rivals this year. 
U.S. brands had a particularly strong showing this year, reflecting concerted efforts in <a href="/topics/Detroit">Detroit</a> to catch up to foreign rivals who have traditionally dominated the quality study, said David Sargent, J.D. Power's vice president for vehicle research. 
Top-five finishers Lincoln and Mercury are owned by <a href="/topics/Ford_Motor_Company">Ford Motor Co</a>., while <a href="/topics/Buick">Buick</a> is owned by <a href="/topics/General_Motors">General Motors</a> Co. The <a href="/topics/Cadillac_DTS">Cadillac DTS</a> full-sized sedan, which is sold by <a href="/topics/General_Motors">GM</a>, was named highest-quality car overall. 
"The domestics are moving a little bit faster catching up," Sargent said. 
Toyota, whose reputation has come under scrutiny in the face of massive recalls, fell two spots from its third-place standing last year. While average vehicle quality across the industry improved from last year's survey, Toyota's quality score fell slightly. 
However, the Japanese nameplate still swept four segment awards, more than any other brand, while its luxury <a href="/topics/Lexus">Lexus</a> brand took one segment award. Japanese rival <a href="/topics/Honda">Honda</a> took three awards, while <a href="/topics/Ford_Motor_Company">Ford Motor Co</a>.'s Lincoln brand took two. 
The industry average was 155 problems per 100 vehicles, J.D. Power said, or less than two problems per vehicle. That's a decline from 167 problems per 100 vehicles last year. 
Sargent said that's roughly in line with the industry's historical rate of quality improvement. 
"If you don't improve by 5 to 10 percent every year, you will get left behind," he said. 
<a href="/topics/Chrysler">Chrysler</a> Group LLC was the only <a href="/topics/Detroit">Detroit</a> automaker without any marques above the industry average. <a href="/topics/Land_Rover">Land Rover</a> owners reported the most problems among the 36 brands surveyed by J.D. Power. 
J.D. Power's 2010 dependability study surveyed more than 52,000 original owners of 2007 model-year vehicles between October and December 2009. The results are watched closely by automakers and are often used in advertising. Owners' opinion of a car after three years can be a major influence on their opinion to buy that brand again. 
The firm also releases an initial quality study, which measures problems in the first 90 days of ownership. That study usually comes out in June.

Hybrid or hype? 
More and more automakers rolled out their newest hybrids, or announced plans to do so, at the Geneva Auto Show on Tuesday, begging the question: Is the future now, or is this just an attention-grabbing stunt while the real powerhouse of the automotive world remains king combustion?

<a href="/topics/Porsche">Porsche</a> kicked off the show with its new Cayenne S sports utility vehicle. French group PSA Peugeot <a href="/topics/Citroen">Citroen</a> SA is launching hybrids in 2012. And Toyota aims to have a hybrid across every model range by 2020. 
Executives cite consumer demand for gasoline-electric powered cars and the drive to stay competitive as fuel efficiency standards get more and more strict. 
But while hybrid pioneer Toyota, the world's largest car company, can point to the third generation of its successful Prius range for its green credentials, most manufacturers have bet the firm on improving their gas-powered vehicles for the foreseeable future. Some appeared content to offer hybrids as little more than a moral fig leaf for consumers who feel guilty about their carbon footprint. 
"Hybrid sales are not booming any part of the world," said <a href="/topics/Saab">Saab</a> CEO Jan Acker. "One reason being of course is it is a very expensive proposition and today's gasoline and diesel applications are getting more and more efficient." 
"Many people are asking themselves, for another two miles per gallon or whatever it might be, is it really worthwhile paying $5,000 or $6,000 for a hybrid solution?" he asked. "I think the hybrids need to be a little more cost efficient until we see a volume." 
<a href="/topics/Saab">Saab</a>, of course, has its own special set of problems, relaunching an automaker that sputtered to a standstill until the Dutch automaker Spyker made a deal in December. Right now <a href="/topics/Saab">Saab</a> is focusing on restarting production and filling its distribution chain — but Acker says hybrid solutions will be part of all vehicles in the future. 
That can range from full hybrids, which alternate between gasoline and electric engines to achieve improved fuel economy, to so-called partial hybrids, or cars with such features as start-stop technology, which automatically shuts down and restarts an engine when stopped to reduce idling and reduce carbon emissions. 
<a href="/topics/Porsche">Porsche</a> CEO Michael Macht touted the Cayenne as "a milestone on the way to electric mobility" for the Volkswagen brand, even as <a href="/topics/Porsche">Porsche</a>'s head of development acknowledged the powerful SUV can manage only 2.8 miles (4.5 kilometers) in pure electric mode. 
"Our aim is to get a double digit range in the medium term," said Wolfgang Duerheimer. 
Selling from $61,000 in the United States, it is the German carmaker's first production hybrid. 
<a href="/topics/Daimler">Daimler</a> has already achieved that with its F800 Style research vehicle. The striking executive limousine has an electric-only range of 18.6 miles (30 kilometers). 
Chief executive <a href="/topics/Dieter_Zetsche">Dieter Zetsche</a> told reporters the hybrid models were a conscious effort to boost <a href="/topics/Daimler">Daimler</a>'s reputation among environmentally conscious consumers, but also make long-term sense as the company sees real potential for electric cars in the future. 
<a href="/topics/Daimler">Daimler</a> sells a fifth of its S-class saloons as a hybrid version — a fraction of total annual sales across its product range. In Geneva, <a href="/topics/Daimler">Daimler</a> added the E-300 BlueTEC diesel-electric to its hybrid lineup, and announced plans for a joint venture with BYD to produce an electric car for <a href="/topics/China">China</a>. 
BMW went for a tried and tested gas-only formula with the redesign of its best-selling 5-series model and the new Mini Countryman, both of which were unveiled in Geneva. Still, the Bavarians said they are working on a hybrid 5-series that automatically switches to electric mode once the car leaves the highway. 
Hedging their bets, <a href="/topics/Audi">Audi</a>, <a href="/topics/Nissan">Nissan</a>, <a href="/topics/Chevrolet">Chevrolet</a> and <a href="/topics/Mitsubishi">Mitsubishi</a> all have various hybrid and electric vehicles in the pipeline, mostly with modest sales figures in mind. 
In the United States, the market share for hybrid vehicles rose from 2.4 percent to 2.7 percent last year. Toyota's Prius accounts for half of those, with the only other mass market models — <a href="/topics/Ford_Motor_Company">Ford</a>'s Fusion and <a href="/topics/Honda">Honda</a>'s Insight — trailing far behind. 
For many automakers, hybrids are still about improving their image, said IHS Global Insight analyst Rebecca Lindland. She said drastic regulation and gas price hikes may be the only way to push consumers — and manufacturers — to embrace hybrids in bulk numbers. 
PSA Peugeot-<a href="/topics/Citroen">Citroen</a> plans to launch the Peugeot 3008, a plug-in hybrid with diesel, in 2012, as well as the <a href="/topics/Citroen">Citroen</a> DS5 Hybrid as part of its goal to have one million cars in its fleet below 120 grams of carbon dioxide per kilometer (.6 mile) by 2012. By 2020, CEO Phillipe Varin thinks hybrids will grab as much as 15 percent of the market. 
"We think that probably hybrids are going to be the area to give the most development in the years to come," Varin said. "We think hybrid may be more important than electronic vehicles."

Automakers show off hybrids at Geneva Auto Show

Fiat, the so called "savior" of Chrysler announced they will be debuting a green version of the Fiat 500 at next week's Detroit Auto Show. Dubbed the Fiat 500 EV, will boast performance and technology similar to that found in BMW’s electric MINI E. The electric Fiat 500 will pack 5,000 battery cells, giving the electric 500 a range of about 150 miles. Also helping to boost the range a bit will be a regenerative braking system and aerodynamic styling cues. Charge times will reportedly be at 10 hours. Acceleration is also esimated to be 10 seconds in a 0-60 mph run. There is no word yet whether this little Italian bug will actually make it to production. The first Fiat car slated to be built and sold here is the Fiat 500 Abarth version (pictured above), which will feature 160-horsepower from a gas sipping 1.4-liter turbo four cylinder engine, due out sometime in 2010 or 2011. 
The rest of the Fiat 500 lineup,&nbsp; including the Fiat 500C convertible, will also be on display in Detroit. Forecasts for pricing of the new influx of fiats will reportedly be between $18,000 and $24,000.

The North American Auto Show is underway in Detroit, and it's the chance for the bailed out automakers to show off what they've done with the billions of dollars they received from U.S. tax payers. 
First up is GM, with it's GMC concept, the Granite. It’s a cross between a sport truck and a minivan, sort of like the Kia Soul and Nissan Cube. So what are these features exactly? GM says the Granite’s sides open like French doors, and its rear seats flip or fold to the side, creating enough space for a mountain bike, even with the tailgate closed. It would be powered by a 1.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine, that is part of its new family of small-displacement, highly efficient four-cylinder engines,&nbsp; matched with a six-speed transmission. As far as exterior, there would be no chrome on its surfaces, just satin or brushed metal finishes, giving off an industrial, gritty look, hence its name the Granite. If&nbsp; the Granite goes into production, it would be the GMC smallest vehicle.

What do you get when you cross one of the most modded/tricked out cars of our generation with one of the most boring cars you'll ever see? The Honda CR-Z. 
The CR-Z's inspiration comes from Honda's much-loved CRX two-seater from the 1980s and the much maligned Insight coupe of the 1990's. Honda’s executive VP John Mendel calls the CR-Z “the first hybrid designed to maximize style and fun, in addition to fuel efficiency and economy.” 
As far as style, is a hit and miss. The two-seater rides at about the same height as the Insight, and features that not-so-great hatch back door and widnow. The CR-Z shares many of its underpinnings with the 2010 Honda Insight and is powered by a 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine i-VTEC engine, that&nbsp; produces 122 horsepower and 128 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed manual transmission is standard on the CR-Z. 
&nbsp;Fuel economy is actually on the so-so side, considering it's a compact vehicle, with a small engine, with low hp. The CR-Z gets 31 mpg city, 37 highway. 
The 2011 Honda CR-Z will hit showroomos this summer and will include two trim levels. Standard on the CR-Z models are electronic stability control, automatic climate control, keyless entry, cruise control, and a six-speaker sound system with USB interface. The higher trim EX models add HID headlamps, fog lamps, Bluetooth, leather trim, and upgraded 360-watt audio. A navigation system with voice recognition is optional.

The Shelby team is back and it unveiled a supercharged concept version of the Mustang-based on the2011 Shelby GT350 in honor of the 45th anniversary of the first GT350 and first Shelby big block Cobra. According the Shelby press release, "the concept behind the GT350 was to build a car that is light, nimble and powerful." Beginning with 5.0 liter Ford Mustang GT as its base, the Shelby American team worked with experts from FordRacing, Goodyear, Borla, Cragar and Baer to create the ultimate balanced performance pony car that is true to the spirit of the 1965-1970 MY Shelby GT350. "The 2011 GT350 balances heritage with modern necessity," said Shelby American president Amy Boylan. " &nbsp;"We worked with Ford Racing to supercharge the engine with a goal of 500 horsepower, as well as to sharpen the handling", Boylan added. "Baer Brakes helped engineer the fantastic brakes and we shod the GT350 with 19" modern Cragar wheels and super sticky Goodyear tires. This Shelby is truly a complete performance package." 
The modern design was also conciouss of its predecessors, integrating1965-1970 Shelby styling cues with modern aerodynamics. 
All this customization will cost you a good chunk of change. The Shelby GT350 will add $33,995 to the base price of the Mustang, which comes in at roughly $22,000, and can be ordered at any Ford dealership.&nbsp;

It seems like everyone is jumping on the electric bandwagon. This time its Audi, with a revamped electric version of it's beautiful R8 sports car dubbed the e-Tron. 
According to Car blog <a target="_blank" href="http://jalopnik.com/5445045/audi-reveals-second-e+tron-electric-concept-for-idiots" rel="nofollow">Jalopnik</a>, the e-Tron "draws power from a 45 kWh lithium ion battery which is fed to a pair of electric motors with a combined output of 204 HP.” 
<a target="_blank" href="http://www.autoblog.com/2010/01/11/detroit-2010-audi-e-tron-take-zwei-or-drei-w-video/" rel="nofollow">Autoblog</a> adds, “With its reduced weight, more refined packaging and reworked drivetrain, the e-tron hits 60 mph in 5.9 seconds and – more tellingly – dispatches the run from 37 to 75 in 5.1 seconds. Audi claims the e-tron can run on a single charge for 155 miles after topping up from a 230-volt socket for 11 hours.”
