Ford has given the skinny on the all-new 2012 Focus. The redesigned Focus will be offered as a four-door sedan and five-door hatchback.

The new sedan is sportier looking than outgoing Focus. The 2012 model rides lower than its predecessor, has smoother lines, a trapezoidal lower grille, bold wheel arches and a prominent lines running from the front wheels to back to the rear tunk panel.

The Focus will be one of the first Ford models offered with the optional MyFord Touch control system that debuts this summer in the new Lincoln MKX.

The engine is a new 2.0-liter direct-injected four-cylinder which will be rated at an estimated 155 hp and 145 pound-feet.

Ford isn't talking mileage numbers for the next-gen Focus yet, but with Chevrolet aiming for 40+ mpg on the highway for the the Cruze, Ford will probably be trying to match it.

Ford also said the new Focus will offer an optional full battery electric powertrain. The Focus Electric will join the lineup sometime in 2011 using a lithium ion battery pack and expected to have a driving range of 80-100 miles.

At a Detroit Auto Show press conference Ford executives said the new Focus' development philosophy was "Great to look at, Great to sit in, Great to drive."

We'll get to see the reality of this philosophy when the Focus hits showroom floors sometime in late 2011.
