Volkswagen Golf nabs New York Auto Show's top honors

The all-new seventh-generation Volkswagen Golf was named the World Car of the Year at a press conference this morning held in the Jacob K. Javits Center during the 113th annual New York International Auto Show. This year marks the second consecutive one in which Volkswagen took home the top honors. At last year's NYIAS, the German automaker's Up! Mini car nabbed the award.
Volkswagen also grabbed the award in 2010 and 2009, for the Polo and sixth-generation Golf, respectively.
The car made its North American debut yesterday at the Auto Show and will begin with the 2015 model year. It features a turbocharged, direct-injected four cylinder 1.8-liter engine that produces 170 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. It is expected to improve fuel economy by 15 percent over the 2013 version, which gets 33 highway miles to the gallon for its $18,095 base model.
Other winners at the World Car Awards this morning, included the Porsche Cayman and Boxster models, which were named World Performance Cars of the Year. The Tesla Model S was awarded the World Green Car of the Year and the Jaguar F-Type took the trophy in the World Car Design category.
