Erica B. Garay has been appointed chair of the newly formed practice group specializing in alternative dispute resolution at Meyer, Suozzi, English & Klein in Garden City. A resident of Melville, she has been a member of the firm's litigation practice group since 2003. Alternative dispute resolution resolves legal disutes outside a courtroom without formal litigation and involves techniques such as arbitration, mediation and neutral evaluation. BOARDS & ASSOCIATIONS
Thomas B. Lally has joined the board of trustees of Briarcliffe College in Bethpage. Before retiring, the Smithtown resident was president of Heller Equity Capital Corporation in Chicago.

Eric Schmidt has been elected commander of the U.S. Power Squadron District 3 (Long Island). The Franklin Square resident is an electrical contractor. Though born in Brooklyn, by 16 he was working as a commercial long line fisherman for his family's fishing fleet in Norway.

John Bilello has joined the board of PULSE of NY, a nonprofit community-based patient safety organization that provides education on inpatient safety and trains patient-safety advocates. The Bellmore resident is a pharmacist at Waldbaum's in East Setauket.

EDUCATION
Fred Klein has been named a visiting assistant professor of law at Hofstra Law School in Hempstead. He will be teaching classes in criminal procedure and trial advocacy. The Westbury resident was chief of the major offense bureau in the Nassau County district attorney's office before retiring in 2006.

FINANCE
Jonathan S. Tolpin has been promoted to administrative vice president at M&T Bank in Manhattan from the position of vice president and manager, closing & compliance. He is a Jericho resident.

GOVERNMENT
The Incorporated Village of Port Jefferson has named Eric Dunnett village tennis professional at the Port Jefferson Country Club. The East Setauket resident was the assistant tennis professional at Three Village Country Club in Stony Brook.

INSURANCE
LandStar Title Agency in Carle Place announced two new hires.  Margaret T. Ling of Flushing was named vice president and counsel. She was claims counsel at First American Title Insurance Company in Manhattan. Rafe Lieber was named vice president and relationship manager. He was a sales representative at East Coast Abstract in Garden City and lives in Roslyn.

LAW
Andrew M. Roth has joined Sahn Ward Coschignano & Baker in Uniondale as an associate, focusing on commercial litigation. He held a similar position at Berkman, Henoch, Peterson, Peddy & Fenchel, a Garden City law firm, and lives in Bellmore.

TECHNOLOGY
Applied Visions, a software engineering, research and development company in Northport, announced two appointments. Cathleen Ebert-Velardi has been promoted to operations manager and facility security officer. The East Northport resident was promoted from executive assistant. Kelly Bostwick has been promoted to controller from the position of bookkeeper. She lives in Coram.
