Sleepy's, the mattress company, is looking for what it calls a "snooze director."
Some requirements: the ability to fall asleep on a Sleepy's mattress during daylight hours and knowledge of social media, since you will be expected to blog and tweet about the company's different mattresses. Adam Blank, Sleepy's chief operating officer, said the ideal candidate would be "energetic." Hmmm.
"This is a real job," Blank said at the company's Hicksville headquarters. "It's an entry-level marketing position," paying $10 an hour. The job starts out part-time but could become full-time, Blank said. Sleepy's has more than 700 stores, mostly in the Northeast, with 65 in Nassau and Suffolk counties.
Sleepy's has so far received more than 100 applications, said Kimberly Raskin, Sleepy's head of recruitment. She said one candidate wrote in that he was lying on a lounge chair at home when his mother rushed to tell him about the job. "He said, 'This has my name written all over it,' " Raskin said.
Blank said the prime goal of the position will be to attract business through social media sites, including Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, MySpace, as well as through blogs.
So how will the company know if the hire has been successful? "There are two ways," Blank said. "The way we know any person is successful is that the person stays with us and winds up spending his career with us. The second is a little less objective, and that's that the person is able to use the social networking space to get exposure for Sleepy's." The person's success would not be based on the number of hits he or she gets on social media sites, Blank said.
