Alfred Scheffer-designed Amagansett home listed for $3.995M

Set on nearly three-quarters of an acre, this Amagansett Dunes beach house was designed by Alfred A. Scheffer, the man known as “the dean of East Hampton architecture.” It is listed for $3.995 million.

The cottage with five bedrooms and 3.5 baths contains trademark Scheffer touches such as a stone wall fireplace, vaulted ceilings and exposed beams in the great room, says listing agent Kenneth Smallwood of Nest Seekers International.

“It’s a little larger than the normal beach bungalow, and it’s on . . . a tremendous amount of land for that area. A lot of it is natural vegetation,” adds owner Blake Fleetwood.

The 0.74-acre parcel has a split driveway, a dune with native pine trees, indigenous plantings and a flat, grassy backyard with a patio. A stone path through the grassy lawn leads to an in-ground heated swimming pool.

Blake Fleetwood says his mother, Maria, a psychiatrist, was friends with Scheffer and tapped him to design the home after she bought four lots in Amagansett. His brother, Francis Fleetwood, then 12, offered input on the home, which was completed in 1958.

Francis Fleetwood, who died in May 2015, went on to become a prolific figure in Hamptons architecture who built homes for Alec Baldwin, Paul McCartney, Calvin Klein and others, his New York Times obituary reads.
