Buying a home in Inwood

The tiny hamlet of Inwood on Nassau County’s South Shore is a place where neighbors know each other and look out for each other, says agent Pinchus Heskiel of Charles Rutenberg Realty.
Heskiel says it’s a tight-knit community where “people treat each other like relatives” and residents “want to be involved in bettering their hometown.” The locals take pride in tending to their yards and gardens, Heskiel says, and they never let visitors leave empty-handed, whether they’re giving you a jar of homemade tomato sauce or an armload of homegrown produce.
The Town of Hempstead’s Affordable Housing Program brought five newly constructed homes to Inwood in 2015. Town spokeswoman Susie Trenkle-Pokalsky says residents were chosen by lottery to qualify for the $172,000, three-bedroom houses in 2013. The families moved in this summer. The 1,715-square-foot houses have 1 1⁄2 baths, a dining room, living room, laundry and utility room, and a one-car garage.
Inwood Park is a destination for recreation in the hamlet, offering a lighted field for baseball and football, basketball courts, tennis courts and a walking path around the perimeter. The 16-acre facility also offers a playground, picnic area and lighted roller rink. The marina on the site offers saltwater fishing, crabbing and a launch ramp for boaters.
The Inwood Country Club covers more than 167 acres of the hamlet. The private club’s golf course was built in 1901 and played host to the 1921 PGA Championship and the 1923 U.S. Open. The Georgian-style clubhouse on the property was built in 1917 and underwent renovations in 2000 in preparation for the club’s centennial.
