Fire Island home linked to Robert F. Kennedy lists for $1.8M

Robert F. Kennedy is said to have stayed at a historic Fire Island home that was just listed for $1.8 million.

Called Driftwood, the three-bedroom cottage was built in 1905 and sits in Corneille Estates, a small community to the west of Ocean Beach.

Kennedy, who had supported the creation of Fire Island as a national seashore, paid a visit there while campaigning for the U.S. Senate in 1964, landing in a helicopter in a ball field near the cottage, according to the book “Fire Island” by Shoshanna McCollum.

Lori Bergeron, whose father, Donald Halstead, bought the cottage in 1969, said friends and neighbors would always ask if it was true Kennedy had stayed there.

“The house has always had its lore,” Bergeron says.
