The tiki bar, that bamboo and grass roof structure with a Polynesian flair, was introduced to the United States in the 1930s. Today, it can still be found in backyards across Long Island. Here are some homes for sale that list a tiki bar with purchase.
Islip $389,000
When they added a tiki bar to the custom-built deck of their circa-1912 Islip home, owners Lynn and John Stella decided on a do-it- yourself approach. She's an artist and he's in flooring and construction. They bought a stand-alone bar and added the tiki touches themselves, plus a refrigerator. The family -- especially their two sons -- enjoys hosting karaoke nights with friends in the backyard. "We have a good time back here," says Lynn. The deck also features a built-in koi pond and a roofed pergola.
The couple updated the vintage, seven-room house, creating an open floor plan that incorporates an eat-in kitchen, a formal dining room and a family room with a gas fireplace. The house, on the market for $389,000, has three bedrooms, two full baths and a detached 1½-car garage on a 36-by-194-foot lot. There are wood floors throughout and a walk-in closet in the master bedroom. Listing agents are Tracy Sobel and Lisa Kennedy of Ramsay Realtors.
Locust Valley $635,000
The good times keep rolling at a high-ranch in Locust Valley that's listed at $635,000. After installing an in-ground pool and a Jacuzzi, the owners thought a tiki bar would be a nice addition. They purchased one in Louisiana and had it shipped to Long Island. The bar is made from wood collected in the bayous. They eventually replaced the original thatched roof with cedar. Pictures of family and friends hang under the roof along with signs they've collected on their travels. They say the bar, which seats five, is the focal point of all their backyard parties. The nine-room house, built in 1965, has five bedrooms and three full baths. It features an eat-in kitchen, a formal dining room, vaulted ceilings, an office, a family room with a wood-burning fireplace and an attached 1½-car garage. The property measures 98 by 100 feet. Listing agents are Leslie French and Jon Cifuentes at East Egg Realty.
Massapequa $399,000
The owner of this 1949 Cape in Massapequa, on the market for $399,000, came home one day to find his father, uncle and a couple of friends busy building a tiki bar in his backyard. The New York City fireman had been talking about getting a tiki bar for some time. He and his dad worked together on the finishing touches, adding running water, lights, fans, a beer-tap system and a refrigerator. Mementos from his vacations decorate the bar along with souvenirs from his honeymoon in Bora Bora and Tahiti two years ago. Listing agent Sharon Jones of Prudential Douglas Elliman describes the house, on a 60-by-100- foot lot, as "pristine." The interior of the six-room home has three bedrooms, one full bath, an eat-in kitchen, wood floors throughout plus an attached, one-car garage.
Franklin Square$810,000
When the owners of a 1950 home in Franklin Square, listed at $810,000, were celebrating their 25th wedding anniversary, they marked the occasion by building a tiki bar for the backyard party their children were throwing for them. They also started a tradition. Every year since the bar was built, they've hosted a big summer tiki party for family and friends. The 60-by-148-foot parcel also has a heated in-ground pool. Listing agent Joe Ann Stampfel of Prudential Douglas Elliman says the original house has been dormered and expanded to create 10 rooms with four bedrooms and 4½ baths. An open floor plan on the first level includes a living room with a gas fireplace, a formal dining room and an eat-in kitchen. Sliding-glass doors open onto a wood deck in the rear of the house. There is a full finished basement plus six-zone radiant heating.
