Like many original Gold Coast homes, this restored 1928 charmer was built as a retreat for a wealthy couple -- Peter and Sonia Colfax. Unique in many ways, the Upper Brookville dacha -- Russian for a country home -- was designed for Sonia, a Russian immigrant who is said to have been Bohemian and artistic.
"It's very romantic," says Cottie Maxwell Pournaras of Daniel Gale Sotheby's International Realty, who is marketing the property for $1.375 million. Balconies, fireplaces and an open living room with an intricate display of ceiling beams, as well as unusual windows -- including those with slender arches -- lend to a country-house feel.
The current owners, Pournaras adds, brought the home into the 21st century with improvements that include a gourmet kitchen fashioned with cherrywood cabinets and stainless steel appliances.
The house has four bedrooms and four bathrooms.
Outside, the two-acre property, which adjoins Planting Fields Arboretum, has a rear patio and an in-ground pool. The scene can be enjoyed from the second-floor balcony off the master suite.
