The historic 1824 Zachariah Hawkins House, a former bed-and-breakfast in Port Jefferson Village, is on the market for $875,000. The house, being sold in an estate sale, also has a legal studio apartment above the detached garage on the ¼-acre property a few blocks from downtown. Taxes are $9,512.

The 2,614-square-foot home was featured in a 1939 Better Homes and Gardens article that talked about its “new front porch design,” now called a sunroom. It was part of the Historical Society of Greater Port Jefferson's annual holiday house tours in 1984 and 2001 and served as a bed-and-breakfast for many years, including for a time after the most recent owner, the late Harriet Lasser, bought it in 1987.

“My mom had people like physicists and people from out of the country stay in the house for periods of time while they worked at Stony Brook University," said Lasser's daughter, Alison Gernhart. "She loved the house for 35 years and opened its doors to many people during that time.”

Zoned for the Port Jefferson School District, the house has four bedrooms and 2½ bathrooms. The front and back parlors and the kitchen all have fireplaces, and a covered porch in the back leads to brick patios and a garden.

The kitchen can use updating, said listing agent Kristin Bodkin of Coach Real Estate Associates.

“Every single room in the house is charming, but it also has a lovely backyard,” she said. “You almost feel like you're in a courtyard with beautiful flowers and a peaceful sense of privacy.”
