Originally the superintendent's house of the Otto Kahn Estate in Cold Spring Hills, this 11-room Colonial is on the market for $999,000.

Built in 1917, it's one of five residences dating back to the beginning of the estate, says Gayle Snyder, associate broker of Coach Realtors in Huntington, who is marketing the home. It was designed by Delano & Aldrich, the same architects who created what is now Oheka Castle.

Set back on Green Meadow Lane, which was Kahn's racetrack, the house was remodeled and expanded to 5,300 square feet in 2000. Features include high ceilings, original wood floors and moldings, as well as two fireplaces. The glass in the windows is original as well.

The gourmet eat-in kitchen, with its center island and high-end stainless-steel appliances, has French doors that open to the 1-acre property, where there is an in-ground heated saltwater pool with a rock waterfall.

The house also has a screened porch as well as five bedrooms, three full bathrooms and two half-baths.

When Otto Hermann Kahn, who was a financier and philanthropist, had the 109,000-square-foot French-style chateau built, it was (and still is) the second-largest private residence built in America, according to the Oheka Castle website. The largest is the Biltmore in North Carolina.
