THE SCOOP Some landmarks are more memorable than others. And the hamlet of Farmingville houses one that certainly makes an impression. That would be the monumental obelisk painted in the colors of the American flag, which dominates Vietnam Memorial Park at the Bald Hill scenic overlook. The overlook is one of the highest points on the Island.

This community also is touted for its convenient location. Farmingville is close to major highways as well as to Long Island MacArthur Airport, the Ronkonkoma train station and several shopping centers.

"It has so much to offer," says Lynn Deeg of Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage in Ronkonkoma.

Deeg notes the area also offers quaint neighborhoods with nice properties. Ranches, Capes and Colonials rule, though other styles can be found.

"You can buy a house from $150,000 on a foreclosure to the $500,000s for new construction," Deeg says.

Fairfield Properties has two gated town-house rental communities: Fairfield Hills North and South, across the street from each other, off Bicycle Path.

As for the market, David Oakley of Realty Connect USA in Hauppauge says Farmingville has "held its own," but he also notes prices are down about 25 percent from 2007, when the market peaked.
