"We have a small police force, a volunteer fire department, a department of public works and a building department," Mayor William Hendrick says.
Hendrick says plans include a redevelopment of the areas under the Long Island Rail Road tracks and rebuilding the Merrick Road movie theater.
Lynbrook's location provides easy access to major highways, as well as a swift commute into Manhattan and to Kennedy Airport, about eight miles away.
Neighborhoods feature Tudors, Colonials, Capes, ranches and split-levels, usually on compact lots. Other choices include condos, co-ops and apartment buildings. A new development -- Scranton Gables -- will have eight town homes of about 2,700 square feet each, with prices in the $490,000 range.
