This Midcentury Modern Kings Point ranch, listed for $2.8 million, was built into a hill and designed to showcase the arts.

The L-shaped, six-bedroom house with five full bathrooms and two half-baths was completed in 1961. Here, the late Seymour Schweber and his wife, Laura, raised a family and displayed works by prominent artists such as Andy Warhol and George Segal, says their son, Dennis Schweber.

Ceiling-to-floor windows in the combined living room and den overlook tree-lined Manhasset Bay; in the winter, there are water views. An eat-in kitchen opens to a large teak deck, which has similar views and was a gathering place for the family, Schweber says.

The formal dining room features tigerwood cabinets and large windows; a master-bedroom suite — one of five bedrooms on the main level — includes a dressing room and a bathroom en suite.

A custom spiral staircase near the home’s front door descends to the finished lower level with high ceilings, a bedroom suite, playroom with a fireplace, a cedar closet, a billiards room and a three-car garage. A dumbwaiter connects to the main floor laundry room, which is across the hall from the pantry.

Outside, a long, meandering brick path on the 1.47-acre property leads to a wooden staircase, which snakes skyward to a deck with an octagonal structure in the trees called “39 Steps” — named for the approximate number of steps, as well as a 1935 Alfred Hitchcock-directed thriller.

The space is trimmed with wood plaques bearing quotes from the Bible, the Talmud, Pablo Picasso and others, and has a glass ceiling. Schweber says his father would retreat there to read by the fire of a potbellied stove.
