Lattingtown mansion has ties to Rockefellers

A Lattingtown mansion with 17 gables listed for $3.9 million was once the carriage house for the Rockefeller family estate, its listing agent says.

Owner Lewis Ranieri, noted for his work in mortgage-backed securities during his tenure at Salomon Brothers, purchased the house in April 2003. He later collaborated with Margaret Kittinger, a partner in the architecture firm Beyer Blinder Belle, to create an “Arts and Crafts masterpiece,” says listing agent Michael Stanco, of Douglas Elliman Real Estate. He is co-listing with Ludmilla Stanco.

“She and Lewis really designed every square inch of this home in a manner of detail that is not typically seen, even in the most custom, high-end luxury residences,” he adds.

A floral theme carries throughout the four-bedroom, three-bathroom, two-half-bath house in fixtures, etchings and hand-carved German wood accents. All of the furniture is custom-designed, and a custom Steinway piano is located in the main public room. Interior metal finishes are by Samuel Yellin.

The first floor includes a great room with a fireplace, an art room, a den-library, an eat-in kitchen with a breakfast nook and a formal dining room. Upstairs, there is a master-bedroom suite, an additional en-suite bedroom, two bedrooms and a full bathroom. A fully finished lower level includes a den, a wet bar and a horse carriage entrance with the original barn door.

The brick wall-lined on 5.82-acre property includes thousands of tulips, formal gardens, fountains imported from Rome, old-growth trees and an apple orchard. There is also an in-ground pool with a cabana pool house, a bluestone patio and a two-car detached garage. A “very European, graceful garden and courtyard” is situated in front of the home, Stanco says.

For an additional $2 million, a buyer can create a nearly 11-acre compound by buying five adjacent acres, also owned by Ranieri, where the Rockefeller estate’s home was located, Stanco says.
