New roads, village green buff up Laurel Hollow

Laurel Hollow, a waterfront community between Cold Spring Harbor and Oyster Bay Cove, offers a “unique combination of natural beauty, interesting history and strong sense of community,” says Village Mayor Daniel F. DeVita.
The bucolic village of 610 homes features lush hills that fold into the rocky beaches of the harbor, DeVita says. Lined with bluffs and beaches, the harbor and bay are now mostly used for recreation, but the waterways remain the largest commercial oyster producer in New York, he adds.
Adding to the area's appeal is a two-phase, $3-million road reconstruction program that will be completed over two years, with the first phase nearly done. DeVita says 60 percent of the roads in Laurel Hollow will be repaved, and portions with cement curbing that is more than 60 years old will be replaced with Belgian block curbs. “This is the largest reconstruction program in our 92-year history,” he says.
The village green, next to Village Hall, in recent years has added LED lighting, a playground, new public bathrooms, landscaping and other improvements, DeVita says.
Laurel Hollow Beach, which is private to residents and offers a dock and kayak racks, bookends the season by hosting end-of-school-year and end-of-summer parties. Laurel Hollow is also home to the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, world-renowned for its research into genetics and cancer, and the Cold Spring Harbor Fish Hatchery and Aquarium.
The predominant housing styles in Laurel Hollow are Colonials and Capes, says Jeanne Leonard of Daniel Gale Sotheby’s International Realty in nearby Cold Spring Harbor. The north side of Laurel Hollow, which she says features rolling hills and tree-covered parcels, offers waterfront properties. Prices can range from just under $1 million to homes that command close to eight figures. Attractions, she says, include the Cold Spring Harbor schools and access to Oyster Bay beaches.

The area has drawn notable residents, including former Beatle John Lennon and his wife, Yoko Ono, actress Lindsay Lohan and artist Lewis Comfort Tiffany, the son of the founder of Tiffany & Co., who owned the nearly 600-acre Laurelton Hall estate.
