Living in Dix Hills

Often referred to as an upscale community, the hamlet of Dix Hills is set in a rolling wooded environment close to major highways.
"The location offers great access to the Northern State Parkway and the Long Island Expressway," says William Tarantola of Coach Realtors. Tarantola notes the community also is popular for its two school districts -- Half Hollow Hills and Commack. Half Hollow Hills is known for its program for students with autism spectrum disorder, while Commack High School was named in U.S. News & World Report's 2013 Best High Schools in the Nation.
Recreation spots include Dix Hills Park on Vanderbilt Parkway, where there is an outdoor swimming pool, a nine-hole golf course and an indoor skating rink. Dix Hills Performing Arts Center at Five Towns College has a 500-seat theater.
But when it comes to things such as shopping and dining out, residents have to travel to commercial areas, such as those along Jericho Turnpike. The setting in Dix Hills is more of a "private oasis," says Danielle Curti of Winkler Real Estate, noting the hamlet attracts a lot of professionals. Tarantola notes many executives relocate here.
Quiet neighborhoods feature manicured properties, most of them at least 1 acre. The next-most-popular size is a half acre. Colonials rule, though other styles can be found. Strathmore residents have their own pool and tennis club.
