A certain mood settles over people who enter the grounds of a certain home in Northport, says Ellen Patterson. It starts as they crest a hill and see the sprawling koi pond. It increases when they enter a courtyard guarded by sculptures of knights on horseback. The clincher is when they pull up to the arched door of a real-life castle complete with a turret.
"That's when you really feel like you're in another land," says Patterson, an agent with Daniel Gale Sotheby's International Realty in Cold Spring Harbor.
Such a feeling can be conjured up at other spots throughout Long Island, where architectural representatives from all corners of the globe can be found, ranging from castles to Italian villas to Persian palaces. Often, these are dream dwellings that reflect the owner's love of a particular part of the world, agents say.
Take that French chateau in Northport, for example.
"Every detail inside and out was hand-picked by the owner," Patterson says.
Of course, finding a buyer with a similar dream can be a challenge.
"There's a specific pool of buyers that have a deep appreciation for these homes," says Patricia Nicklaus with Coach Realtors in Port Jefferson, who is listing a 104-year-old English Tudor in Belle Terre. The home is part of a colony of manor houses built at the turn of the last century by Manhattanites for summer entertaining. The Gilded Age ambience is reflected in touches like the bell pushers placed throughout the home to call the maid, Nicklaus says.
"There's a lot of history here," she says.
Todd Bourgard with Coldwell Banker Trading Places in Hampton Bays says he particularly likes the "enchanted forest" setting of a Swiss chalet that he is listing in Hampton Bays.
"People don't necessarily come out here for this kind of look, which makes it a bit more difficult [to sell]," he says. "This chalet should be sitting on snow in Vermont, but it's got a real country feel."
