Sometimes what’s old is new. An old garden wall, enhanced with plantings by an owner with a seriously green thumb, sets the mood for what the current issue of Architectural Digest calls one of the world’s most spectacular pools.

The pool is part of a Palladian-style property in East Hampton designed for an artist by New York City architect Alexander Gorlin. When Gorlin first got involved with the property 20 years ago, there was a ranch house; that was replaced with an Italian-style villa “to go with the wall,” says Gorlin. “It was like building backward in time.”
