An oceanfront property in Montauk comes with two separate one-bedroom cottages on more than an acre of property. It is on the market with the third owners for $3.99 million.

The larger cottage has a kitchen and a den with a fireplace. There are renderings for a new home with water views in place.

The original home was built in the early 1900s by Sam Loper, who eventually served as captain of the Life-Saving & Coast Guard Station in Ditch Plains, says owner Ellen Cooke, whose father, John McMahon, bought the property in 1960.

The second owner, an English professor named William Bradley Otis, added the second cottage by 1930. Cooke says her father purchased the home after seeing a For Sale sign and chatting with Otis. The two were “kind of kindred spirits,” Cooke says, and Otis waited for her father to secure a mortgage.

“It’s pretty remarkable that in more than a hundred years, the house has only had three owners and is pretty much as it always was,” Cooke says.

The property is listed with Chris Coleman of Saunders & Associates.
