Architect Richard Haviland Smythe, who worked with philanthropist Ward Melville on many projects — including the design of Stony Brook’s crescent-shaped village center — designed a center-hall Colonial on Main Street in Stony Brook now on the market for $922,500.
Within walking distance of the shops, restaurants and Avalon Park, the property — three quarters of an acre — is set on a tidal creek with a pond and a rushing waterfall. “It’s like a nature preserve,” says listing agent Grace Fitterer of Re/Max Signature Real Estate.
She says that all 14 rooms of the house offer a view, whether it’s of the property or the village.
Built in 1941, the three-story house has five bedrooms and 5 1/2 bathrooms. The rooms include a conservatory with a potting shed is next to it.
The third floor has two separate rooms and a bathroom. This space is being used as an artist’s studio, says Fitterer, noting, “It’s filled with lovely light and views of the pond.”
