New Hyde Park is ‘respite’ for NYC commuters

THE SCOOP New Hyde Park, situated on the border of Nassau County and Queens, offers a “respite for those who work in the city to come home and relax in a suburban environment,” says New Hyde Park Village Mayor Lawrence Montreuil.
The area, which includes the village and North New Hyde Park, is near Manhattan, which is one of its greatest draws, he says, noting the 34-minute train ride from Penn Station. With the Long Island Rail Road constructing a third track in the area, Montreuil says the village is “contemplating a downtown revitalization that would complement the work that the LIRR is doing along the trackside, which is currently an industrial strip.”
That, with potential rezoning, could include transit-oriented housing or mixed-use development, he says.
“It could revitalize the area and create a very attractive and walkable center of our community,” he says. “I think it will also bring a lot of economic benefit. I envision some cafes, shops, bistros, along with some residential units.”
New Hyde Park features predominantly single-family homes, and the most common housing style is the Cape, says 20-year resident Kenny Muralee of Re/Max Central Properties. New construction in the area, he adds, has led to an increase in Colonials in New Hyde Park. Prices typically range from $575,000 to $950,000, he says.
With the area’s shopping, recreation, business district and quick commute to the city, New Hyde Park is “a perfect town for those who do not want to spend their extra time traveling every day,” Muralee says.
New Hyde Park earned national Tree City designation last summer, after an effort to plant more trees in the village. A $21 million renovation of the Clinton G. Martin Park pool facility was approved in May. In addition to village parks, the area is also home to Michael J. Tully Park in North New Hyde Park.
Montreuil says that Umberto’s on Jericho Turnpike is a “very popular place to get the best pizza in the world, arguably.”
