THE SCOOP

When Ron Iannacone, president of the Northport Chamber of Commerce, first visited the village in 1996, he told his wife, “I feel like we just drove into a quaint little town somewhere in New England.”

With the turn-of-the-century buildings and shops that line Main Street and the vintage homes scattered throughout the North Shore village, “you get a sense of small town, everybody knows each other,” says Iannacone, a local podiatrist and the trombone player in the Northport Community Band.

Offering a walkable downtown, parks and a dock overlooking Northport Harbor, there was only one thing Northport was lacking, Iannacone says: “a place to have relatives stay — there really were no accommodations.”

That will soon change now that the owners of the John W. Engeman Theater on Main Street plan to build a 24-room hotel and restaurant on the property across the street.

Northport Mayor Damon McMullen says the project is expected to be completed within one to two years. Newsday reported in October that the owner says the cost of construction would be between $9 million and $11 million and that the upscale hotel would provide year-round accommodations for theatergoers and wedding visitors.

McMullen says that earlier this year, Northport completed a sewer upgrade project that began in 2013, with the final phase replacing deteriorating lines that ran along the harbor shoreline. To further improve the water quality in the harbor, McMullen says more homes along the water will be added to the sewer system beginning in March.

The hope, he says, is to have “a cleaner harbor that you can boat in, swim in and catch a striped bass in and then come home and throw it on the grill," all of which will "keep property values up.”

“Whether you live on the water or not, we all benefit from a cleaner harbor," McMullen says.

Northport offers an eclectic mix of housing styles, with prices typically ranging from the high $500,000s to around $1 million, says Donna Loring of Coldwell Residential Brokerage in Northport. That includes vintage Victorians and Capes along the waterfront, Colonials and ranches throughout the village, as well as some modern and Contemporary homes, she adds.

“Northport is like a little nook,” Loring says. “It’s a hideaway that’s quiet and nice but right next to everything you need.”

Northport is home to Lewis Oliver Farm, which dates back to the 1800s and serves as a sanctuary for rescued farm animals; the Robert W. Krueger Bandshell, a concert site; and Northport Village Park, offering waterside playgrounds and gazebos. Annual events include the Great Cow Harbor 10K Run and the Leg Lamp Lighting Ceremony, which was recently held at Carl’s Candies on Main Street.
